Introduction

The previous chapters of this book provided you with comprehensive background information about wireless and mobility concepts. You learned about the unique attributes that distinguish wireless from mobile, read about various consumer and business drivers behind their rapid growth, and learned about some of the enabling technologies that make it all work. Based upon this foundation, we then provided you with a quick review of today’s most prevalent mobile devices and the networks they operate with. For some of you, we hope that Part I of this book served as a useful refresher. Other readers may join us right now after having skipped through the background material. Welcome to Part II!

Defining the Value Web Framework

In this and the following chapters, we look at a unique approach to assessing the wireless universe. We will introduce Cap Gemini Ernst & Young’s proprietary methodology for strategic analysis called the Value WebSM. The Value Web is an innovative framework intended to support CGE&Y project teams in the development and delivery of insights for the company’s clients concerned with deriving value from mobile technologies. Value for CGE&Y’s clients is usually defined as reducing operating expenses, generating
additional revenue, and streamlining business processes to increase profitability while enhancing customer service. Thus, the framework is integral in the quest for understanding and applying mobile and/or wireless
technologies for the purposes of creating a competitive advantage and improving the customer experience.

This chapter defines what we mean by a Value Web and presents the major benefits associated with preparing such an analysis as a tool for strategy formulation. We will then provide you with step-by-step instructions for how to create and analyze a Value Web for your own company. Chapter 6 presents an already completed Value Web for the wireless industry as we know it today. After you have read both chapters, you will see how the approach can provide valuable insights, whether it is applied at the company or at the industry level.
