Introduction
Now that we’ve defined the similarities and differences between mobility and wireless, it’s important to understand how to apply them to a real business application. Clients today generally come in two categories: consumers (retail customers like you and me and the business customer (corporations, sole proprietor, and so on). In the world of e-business, we’re accustomed to thinking about the customer through a relationship-based approach. The most common relationships are the following:

  • Consumer-to-consumer (C2C). The Internet has been wildly successful at providing a completely new marketplace for consumers to market goods and services to fellow consumers. eBay is a perfect example of customers selling to customers through an online auctionbased arena. I can buy or sell anything, from a Monet painting valued at 10 million dollars to an American flag key chain selling for a mere $1.50. There are no real suppliers, middlemen, or producers in this scenario. It can be compared to a many-to-many supply relationship. The buyer and seller don’t need to have a special relationship with each other to buy the offered product. As a seller, I can market my product in any way that’s easiest for me, as long as I respect the rules of the online host, which in this case is eBay. We’ll talk more about how mobility fits into the C2C world a little later in this chapter.
  • Business-to-consumer (B2C). Another very common e-business scenario is the business-to-consumer (B2C) relationship. In our daily lives, it’s almost impossible to imagine a moment when we are not faced with some sort of purchasing decision. All of us are consumers of goods that are produced by a retailer who attains those goods through some supplier relationship. That relationship is known as a business-to-consumer relationship. A typical example of B2C is buying your favorite music CD or DVD movie on the Web through an online retailer such as Amazon.com. Anyone who purchases the items on Amazon.com is the consumer, and Amazon.com is the business or retailer selling the product to the consumers.
