One of the first, and the safest, ways that organizations can begin using wireless technology is by enabling their workforce. It’s fairly safe, because it’s much easier to pilot a mobility program with your own employees and attain qualified feedback about where you can improve as opposed to losing out with an expensive implementation with a client. There are many mobile applications discussed in this section, including some in the B2E (business-to-employee) space that we discussed in Chapter 1. The approach for  this section is to look at the benefits of a mobile workforce and then drill down into the mobile applications that are currently considered costefficient enablers. As such, the key benefits of a mobile and a potentially
wireless workforce are:

  • Reduced traveling
  • Streamlined data entry
  • Scheduling effectiveness
  • Administrative management

The following sections cover each of these areas separately, while also providing a specific mobility application representative of each.

Reduced Traveling
A great deal of time and money go into traveling to meet with clients to make presentations, perform work, attain knowledge, and monitor progress; traveling is simply a requirement for many jobs. Certainly not
every role within an organization requires travel; however, more and more employees are becoming a mobile workforce. In other words, it’s becoming a necessity to travel to perform our jobs. You may recall a past job interview with either your current company or a past company that listed as a job requirement, travel required. If you’ve ever worked as a sales team member, quite often that is the case. If so, you’re considered a perfect candidate for workforce mobility.
