Field service personnel and technicians can benefit from mobility in similar ways to the sales force teams. Field technicians are also required to spend a great deal of time away from their offices. Quite often, a field service technician’s office is his or her car. Like the sales force, the field force team must service the customer’s needs. Whether that service involves taking new customer orders, tracking of existing orders, or monitoring systems in the field such as meter readings. Figure 2.6 illustrates clearly the benefits of FSM (field service mobility) applications.

From a return on investment perspective, FSM applications have been shown to provide measurable benefits over time, as Figure 2.7 illustrates.

A more detailed CGE&Y FSM case study is covered in Chapter 10. As you’ll see in the next section, the office infrastructure also provides many optimization opportunities for mobility.

Wireless Local Area Networks

Since the inception of the 802.11b and the 802.11a IEEE standards, wireless LANs (local area networks) have become an efficient means of accessing internal company information, especially with wireless conferencing centers and wireless workspaces. All too often, employees’ days are spent in conference rooms attending meetings. Wireless networks provide an efficient means for mobile device users to access any company applications that would normally be provided over a company LAN. With wireless networks providing data speeds in excess of 5 GHz, it’s easy to see why wireless networks are becoming popular.
