Mobility generates revenue growth opportunities that never would have been imaginable before. Leveraging mobile technologies successfully is all about identifying increased revenues or decreased costs, as with all other investments. The profits are normally achieved by increased internal efficiency and improved or new customer services. It is fair to say that companies not using those possibilities will not be competitive in the future. Clients, business partners and employees will soon expect accurate realtime information from all types of companies. This section describes some of the revenue opportunities companies can take advantage of through mobile commerce applications.

Wireless as a Revenue Driver: mCommerce

Mobile commerce (m-Commerce) will increase the overall market for e-commerce through its unique value proposition of providing easily personalized local goods and services anytime and anywhere. An interesting
study by IDC states that by the year 2006, e-commerce spending is predicted to grow to $38 billion, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 32.3 percent through 2006. Also, according to a recent study by Forrester, three-quarters of US households will have at least one “Internetcapable” device by 2005. The PC will still be the primary computing device, but other products—including wireless Web devices—will find a home with North American consumers. According to market research firm Strategy Analytics, the global market for m-Commerce is expected to reach $200 billion by 2004. The number of Internet subscribers will grow from 90 million in 2003 to over 200 million by 2007. In addition, Strategy Analytics expects the U.S. cellular market to grow to 8.8 percent in 2003. Subscribers will increase from to 153.2 million in 2003 and 202 million at the end 2008, with penetration reaching 68.5 percent.

Those numbers represent a significant increase in the wireless user community, and thus an even more significant demand for wireless services. Figure 2.8 takes a look at how m-Commerce is poised to take off and describes how it will have a profound impact on business models and lifestyles.
