Mobility brings a whole new world of technology to our fingertips. Many of these technologies have already been discussed in this book to some extent. However, it’s worth going through some of these enabling technologies and issues that you might be currently experiencing with mobile technology.

  • Increasing bandwidth. The first enabler, and by chance also the most discussed in the mobility realm, is network bandwidth. If you’ve been reading the newspapers or magazine articles pertaining to wireless technology, you’ve probably come across the discussions on the dynamics of network bandwidth and wireless infrastructure. In recent years, one of the most heavily talked about issues is when network and telecommunications providers will launch and complete 3G (third generation) networks. Of course, the key factor in 3G versus 2.5G and analog networks is the capability to be “always on.” In other words, not having to dial up each time you want to perform an activity or receive data. Additionally, mobile devices can access data at blazing broadband speeds similar to our wired desktops. At least that’s the idea. New functionality, like streaming music and video, will open up new markets for consumer’s enterprise customers. Most network providers have begun or are completing implementation of 3G services. We’ll cover 3G and other bandwidth issues later in this book.
  • New devices. The plethora of mobile devices available today often makes the buying decision-making process painful for customers. With each new device appearing to be better, faster, and more powerful
    than the last, how are we to make a choice? To put some of the different types of devices in perspective, let’s go through the various categories of mobile devices. Basically, mobile devices come in four categories, those being:
