Merging Computers and Phones
If you look at how PCs were equipped some years ago and compare them with today’s Pocket PCs, you will see that they have the same performance. Pocket PCs typically have a 200-MHz processor and 64MB of memory, which was the standard for PCs some years ago. Now that color screens are available on these devices, a whole new set of opportunities for how to use these devices arises. The next step for handheld computers is to integrate a telephone functionality in the device—examples of this are already available on the market.
If we look at cell phones, we can see the emergence of two alternative paths: developing smaller phones or merging phones with computers. Cell phones are getting ever smaller, and carrying them around in our pockets will be as common as wearing a watch on our wrist. When it comes to merging cell phones with computers, this has already been achieved—the result is a so-called smartphone (or communicator). Smartphones are the telephone supplier’s answer to the PDA—they bring simplified computer functionalities into the phone. The most common operating system is EPOC (also referred to as the Symbian OS), which gives you the capability to surf the Web, read your e-mail, and download other applications to your phone.
In the future, the differences between PDAs and smartphones will gradually diminish, and there will be no reason to distinguish between them. For the time being, however, the devices will still have different characteristics. Here are some examples of the differences that we see today:
- Weight—related to battery capacity
- Screen size and image quality (resolution)
- Performance available for installed applications
