The gaming industry is focusing on existing phones and PDAs instead of providing specific devices for games connected to the Internet.

There are some companies, such as Cybiko Inc., that manufacture small, handheld gaming devices which can be connected wirelessly to a group of devices that are within 300 feet of each other. This is an example of the kind of devices that we assume will populate the market in a couple of years. Cybiko will, however, require direct Internet access instead of mere local connection. Nintendo—the manufacturer of the GameBoy device—is expected to launch something in this area, but there seems to be more caution in the decision-making process today then there was in the late 1990s.

When we look at the alternatives and compare them with the development of stationary gaming platforms, we expect to see still more games for existing PDAs and smartphones prior to the launch of wireless gaming devices on the market.

Future Devices

Five years from now, we will be using new kinds of equipment and entering information in a different way. Glasses (or goggles) will replace today’s screens, and we will be using our voices and virtual keyboards to enter information and navigate in applications. Let’s take a closer look at some of these potential functionalities.
