The Generations of Wireless
It’s hard to imagine that in some parts of the world, wireless devices and their corresponding networks are nearly as powerful and as fast as the desktop PC. That excitement is driving service providers and software
developers around the globe to design mobile applications that will enable business users to perform functions that were never even remotely considered and to leave their private cubicles and offices. From the simplest function of sending and receiving e-mail messages to more complex functions for monitoring the supply chain processes, mobility has come a long way since the days of the first cell phone. With that in mind, let’s continue our discussion on the wireless evolution to obtain an understanding of the first
generations of wireless networks.
First Generation: Analog
The first generation analog cell phone was a rather bulky piece of equipment that was typically owned by only a fortunate few who could afford the device, or by individuals who didn’t mind carrying around a bricksized phone. Quite often, the phone came with its own bag and antennae that protruded out of its pockets or was accessible through a briefcase. This invention nonetheless was the exciting beginning to cellular technology for the consumer and business marketplace. The concept of “mobile” devices for voice communication was truly nothing new at the time (early 1980s). However, the important technology of leveraging a distinct network of “cells” to enable wireless voice communication was a revolution in the way people would communicate in the future. Without getting too technical, “cell” technology works by assigning multiple base stations to a subset of users, thereby increasing the system’s capacity exponentially, while reducing power requirements for the user terminals, in this case the analog cell phones. Analog networks only have the ability to carry your voice, not data. So, it’s impossible to send an e-mail or any other type of data element that requires the movement of digital information.
