Bluetooth (2)
Still, Bluetooth poses a considerable security risk because users can be completely blind to what is happening to their mobile device as they travel from place to place. Stealth viruses are poised to take advantage of this new medium and behave in the same manner as airborne viruses, jumping from device to device. In the past, users infected their computers with viruses by sharing information through the physical medium of a floppy disk or by downloading an infected file from the Internet. With Bluetooth, you just need to walk by someone. Picking up a mobile device virus from a stranger may become easier than contracting the common cold.
Although the industry is not fully developed to provide the utopian electronic community where consumers or business people roam freely and share data, users will quickly embrace the technology for its merit of
freedom. The implications for m-Commerce transactions using this medium are staggering. Technologies such as Bluetooth are expected to significantly propel and enhance all forms of m-Commerce, especially in
the consumer-to-consumer market. Accordingly, security risks will increase at the same rate and must be met with strict resolve, antivirus technology, and personal security policies.
In addition to catching a mobile virus, Bluetooth technology allows one to track users by their PIN numbers. Mapping a PIN to a user’s identity opens the door for a whole new list of potential violations against personal freedom. Tracking the whereabouts of a user can provide a corporation with insightful information about consumer habits. Similarly, the technology opens channels for government to keep tabs on the citizenry. The threat of such information falling into the wrong hands and being misused increases many fold over previous threats associated with conventional Internet access devices. Although security approaches are under development, manufacturers must focus on educating the users of their products in an effort to create awareness and to take precautions to protect their information and to keep it secret.
