Communication is essential to everything we do, and face-to-face dialogue is definitely the most efficient communication tool we have. Communication is most efficient when we combine speech, facial expressions, and gestures. For instance, we can attach emotions to words through facial expressions or describe the shapes of objects with the help of our hands. Think about this the next time someone describes an event to you—regardless of the situation you are in, you will see that people communicate using all these elements. In order to allow us to communicate as effectively as possible, mobile devices have to combine text, voice, pictures, and ultimately video.

Choosing which tool we want to use when we communicate has become a daily task. Some topics demand that you speak to another person directly (by using a phone), whereas other topics are best communicated via text (e-mail). A text message would for instance suffice when ordering a spare part you already know that you need. Conversely, in-depth consultation with a colleague might be necessary when deciding exactly which spare part needs to be replaced.

New communication opportunities are available to us today—videophones are one example of this—but they can only be used on a fixed line. We will, however, soon be able to use mobile videophones with which it will be possible to see the person you are speaking to and show him or her objects as you are describing them. A small built-in camera in the device will enable this. We now need to understand how these new mobile functionalities can support communication. Let’s begin by describing in what situations they can be useful and then look at the best way to use them.
