In addition to “pure” handhelds such as phones and PDAs, portables such as laptop computers and tablet PCs fit in this category. Equipped with add-on (or embedded) wireless network cards, these computers can be used as communication devices or to receive content over the airwaves.

Besides these more familiar interfaces through which end-users interact with the wireless network, there are several other types of devices that are on the market, including wristwatches powered by Microsoft’s Smart Personal Object Technology (SPOT), telemetry devices for automatically indicating or recording measurements at a distance, and Telematics devices that combine global positioning satellite (GPS) tracking and other wireless communications for automatic roadside assistance and remote diagnostics.
