Content Aggregators (2)
In the wireless space, the concept is the same. Instead of having to search for information by guessing Web site addresses of content creators, endusers simply use an aggregator that has organized the information in an easy-to-use format. In the United States, the larger wireless portals include AOL Wireless, AvantGo, MSN Mobile, Palm.net, and Yahoo Mobile. In Europe, BT’s Genie, Iobox, Mviva, and Vizzavi provide popular portals, whereas J-Sky and NTTDoCoMo are the strongest contenders in Asia. Wireless portals increasingly provide to the users of handhelds some of the same content aggregation services as full-blown, traditional Internet Web sites. In addition, wireless carriers such as Alltel, ATT Wireless, Cingular, Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon have established basic wireless portal services for their customer bases.
One more word about referencers that act as portals. The two types of portals we distinguish between are vertical and horizontal portals. Personal finance sites, such as Quicken Mobile, CBS Marketwatch Mobile, and Yahoo Finance are examples of portals that offer a deep experience with highly relevant content relating to the subject at hand. On the other end of the spectrum, we find horizontal portals, operating sites that accumulate content from seemingly any walk of life. Yahoo Mobile, MSN Mobile, and other portal operators belong in the group of referencers whose goal is to become the thoroughfare through which the user accesses whatever information he or she is seeking.
The second group within the content aggregator cluster encompasses publishers. Basing their revenue on advertising, subscriptions, and commissions, publishers aggregate news, travel products, or other types of information for consumers to access. Examples for companies in this space include CNN, the Financial Times, MSNBC, Microsoft Expedia, Travelocity, the Wall Street Journal, and others. Many publishers maintain archives of the information presented, allowing end-users to search such archives at a later date.
