Examples of network operators include companies such as ATT Wireless, Alltel, BT Cellnet, Cingular, Deutsche Telekom, Nextel, NTT DoCoMo, Orange, Sprint, TeliaSonera, Telstra, Telus, T-Mobile, Verizon, Vodafone and many, many others around the globe.

Essentially, network operators provide the voice and/or data services that enable a wireless device to function. In addition to connecting their large customer bases to other customers and content, network operators maintain the contract and billing relationship with the end-user, thus controlling a very important customer touch point. Critical success factors on the front-end include for network operators to develop or secure innovative end-user applications. Constant innovation can provide the operator with a first mover advantage that provides for differentiation from the intense competition. Especially as average revenue per user (ARPU) from voice communications falls in relation to revenue from data services, competition for end-users is steadily increasing. On the back-end, network operators must implement state-of-the-art self-service operating and business support systems that allow for the efficient management of millions of customers.
