The last category we want to briefly touch upon contains hosting companies.Within this category, we find companies that store all the content. Toomany to list, content hosters provide a valuable link in the interactionbetween content users and content creators/aggregators in that they operateand maintain the servers on which the material is physically stored andprocessed, usually in return for a monthly or annual hosting fee.still-evolving mobile technologies. Drawbacks, besides the familiar issues surrounding wireless access coverage and bandwidth, both of which should be mitigated as new technologies are deployed over the coming years, include questions about handing sensitive data to a third party, the lack of being able to customize the application to fit the outsourcer’s requirements, and the market’s still being in its early stages with no clearly established leaders. Some of the wireless applications provided by WASPs include providing access to customer relationship management, mobile workforce management, and transaction enablement (the service that allows mobile users to check item pricing and availability, and engage in mobile commerce).

Wireless application service providers, or WASPs, provide another category of hosting service in that they not only store content, but also more importantly run applications that process such data. WASPs perform the same services as their wireline brethren in that they host, manage, and maintain business or consumer applications on an outsourced basis. Yet, WASPs add the mobile dimension, because the managed applications are accessible via mobile/wireless devices. The benefits to a company of securing services from a WASP versus creating them in-house include faster time to market, reduced operating expenses, avoiding the acquisition of new hardware, and not having to build a staff of IT professionals versed in still-evolving mobile technologies.
