The final layer of the onion, so to speak, contains a segment we like to call environmental enablers, as illustrated in Figure 6.6. The segment includes trade associations, regulators, standards-setting entities, research firms, and providers of financial services. Environmental enablers provide the products, services, and information that facilitate the entire workings of the industry. They set the foundation upon which economic activity can grow. To use a familiar analogy, similar to a chemical reaction, enablers also act as catalysts that can launch and accelerate the business activities of all other Wireless Value Web participants.

Trade Associations
Trade associations are organizations of companies that are aligned by virtue of their common interests. Just as any other industry’s members organize into trade associations, companies in the wireless industry gather for the purposes of information exchange, leading practices sharing, quality standards definition, or to promote their offerings to members and interested parties outside of the association. In addition, trade associations frequently represent their members in communications with standards associations and legislative regulators to promote the association’s members’ interests. Trade associations, frequently aligned along specific product or service categories, organize trade shows, commission and publish research studies, certify products, and engage in consumer education and information.
