Standards associations, usually independent nonprofit entities, are primarily concerned with the definition and development of technical standards upon which wireless systems and applications are built. Standards associations further engage in promoting their approved standards to enable industry-wide adoption.

Regulators
Regulatory bodies at state, federal, and international levels are policy makers in the governmental structure that oversee various areas within the wireless industry, including wireless spectrum allocation, security, privacy, and other areas. For a list of trade associations, standards organizations, and regulators that illustrates the wide range of entities in the environmental enablers segment, see Appendix A.

Research Firms
Research firms mostly conduct primary market research, develop insights, and publish their findings in reports that cover specific topics within the industry, or about the industry as a whole. Some of the well-known companies in the mobility research space include the Cahners In-Stat Group, Dataquest, Forrester Research, Frost & Sullivan, Gartner, IDC, Herschel Shosteck Associates, Ovum, The Strategis Group, The Yankee Group, and many others. These firms have built a business model around keeping their fingers on the pulse of the industry and selling their diagnosis to whomever purchases a membership or pays on a per report basis.
