Consumer Applications
Today, you have to check several systems separately to see whether you have messages. In other words, you use one device to check e-mail and another to check your voice messages. When you want to check your e-mail while on a business trip, you are dependent upon Internet cafés or a slow connection via your cell phone. This is one of the tangible drawbacks to the lack of connection between your e-mail and voice messages.
The use of cell phones has increased dramatically—just about everyone has one and penetration has been faster than anyone could have expected only a couple of years ago. However, almost all communication today is voice-based. Adults use cell phones to communicate with their children and friends, and spontaneous business meetings are becoming increasingly common because it is easier to get hold of people. The elderly use cell phones not only to communicate with friends and family, but also as a precautionary device in case something should happen when they are taking a walk, driving a car, and so on. We now want to extend this voice communication and combine it with text and graphics in one device.
In the future, you will be able to choose the most suitable device for communication at any given time. The only factor that will dictate your choice is the situation you find yourself in—it will be up to you to decide how you want to have the information presented to you. You will, in short, be able to not only get to your voicemail, but also access e-mail, faxes, and other messages whenever you want, from wherever you are. All you will have to do is to choose between having new messages presented to you in text, voice, or video format. This is called unified messaging. This topic is covered in more detail in Chapter 8.
