Enterprise processes have experienced a revolution—communication between individuals (or functionalities) is much quicker today than it was only 10 years ago. The use of cell phones, e-mail, and even automated messaging (alerts) from IT systems has virtually exploded. However, we are still using PCs and phones as our main devices for exchanging messages. This means that a mobile employee often places calls using a cell phone when an e-mail would actually have been more efficient.

Now, with the use of mobile functionality, we will take one more step toward streamlining our processes and cutting lead times. One of the most important changes that will take place is that we will reduce the amount of paperwork that the mobile worker has to deal with—in much the same way we have done at the office—because most work orders and instructions will be performed via mobile devices (this will be addressed in more detail later in this chapter). The new mobile functionalities will also provide mobile workers, back-office staff, and management with information of higher quality because everybody will feed the back-office system directly.
