The major advantage of sending a text message from a mobile device rather than making a phone call is speed—your main concern is getting a quick response. Text messages can be sent in 15 seconds and they don’t require that the recipient be available. Phone calls, on the other hand, take at the very least 3 minutes to make. Similarly, sending text messages from the new “mixed” devices—such as PDAs or smartphones—will be faster and more efficient than sending traditional e-mails (you will receive replies within hours instead of within days). It is important to point out that this requires a common culture in which people check their messages frequently.

They will also be expected to have activated an autoreply feature when they are not connected to the system for more than, say, one day. Another advantage is that sales reps or field technicians will be allowed to work without interruption while still being available as soon as they take a break. This assumes, of course, that they are performing a task that allows them to check for messages on a regular basis. Today, most mobile workers turn their cell phones off when they are working. When they turn them on again they have to listen to a number of long voice messages, most of which would have been more easily dealt with if they had been in e-mail format.
